Billie Holiday

25 Jun

If you copy, it means you’re working without any real feeling. No two people on earth are alike, and it’s got to be that way in music or it isn’t music.-Billie Holiday

Billie Holiday was a true artist of her day and rose as a social phenomenon in the 1950s. Her soulful, unique singing voice and her ability to boldly turn any material that she confronted into her own music made her a superstar of her time. Today, Holiday is remembered for her masterpieces, creativity and vivacity, as many of Holiday’s songs are as well known today as they were decades ago. Holiday’s poignant voice is still considered to be one of the greatest jazz voices of all time.

Despite her lack of technical training, Holiday’s unique diction, inimitable phrasing and acute dramatic intensity made her the outstanding jazz singer of her day. White gardenias, worn in her hair, became her trademark. “Singing songs like the ‘The Man I Love’ or ‘Porgy’ is no more work than sitting down and eating Chinese roast duck, and I love roast duck,” she wrote in her autobiography. “I’ve lived songs like that.”

Billie Holiday, a musical legend still popular today, died an untimely death at the age of 44. Her emotive voice, innovative techniques and touching songs will forever be remembered and enjoyed.

Movie based on Billies life

Spolight: Elrod

24 Jun

ELROD is an East Bay-based mixed media and special effects artist with a taste for all things kitsch and sparkly. This predominantly self-taught artist and self-proclaimed glitter enthusiast was born and raised in the Southern California heat and made the transition to the bay area about 5 years ago in an attempt to take her creativity to the next level. She has spent the majority of her life getting kicked out of school and painting but didn’t really push herself to pursue her art professionally until she moved to San Francisco.

After having a mildly successful time in the painting and gallery circuit with her sparkly Mexican-inspired pinups and lowriders, ELROD discovered she was a “natural” at makeup application and she knew right away this was where her talents should be focused. If you’re looking for smokey eyes and red lips, move along because she specializes in rotting skin, animal prosthetics, fantasy characters and monsters. She is currently working with various photographers on projects as well as on set for an independent zombie movie who’s trailer will be released in about two months [full production to be realized in 2013]. Until then, you will still catch her hanging her kitschy mixed media work on gallery walls [Public Works in July for the Femme Cartel opening of “Fashionably Drawn” and at Modern Eden at their August opening “Tribute to Metal”] and creating magnificent creatures from her imagination on unsuspecting faces. Check out all her work [and add her on FB!] here: mexakitsch.blogspot.com

AmandaLynn and Lady Mags hit NYC

23 Jun

Lady Mags and Amandalynn just got back from NYC. The Few and Far girls painted a dope wall at Community 54 in the lower East side of Manhattan, as part of the Alynn-Mags summer series with Ironlak. They created this particular piece for Inked Magazine , who will be featuring them in their Art/Design issue, as well as doing an online plug. Lady Mags rocked it out with a fresh chunky Mags piece, and AmandaLynn painted a character inspired by the lovely Jesse Lee , who came to visit the ladies at the wall. They also had the pleasure of being filmed by Tomek Gross, who will be creating a short video about our mural , including a custom song from his band, Dujeous. It was a great trip, painting, visiting with friends, and enjoying the East Coast….til next time!!

Little Dragon

19 Jun

The band’s name was inspired by the “Little Dragon” nickname Nagano earned due to the “fuming tantrums” she used to throw while recording in the studio. “It’s a little exaggerated but there is some truth in it”, Nagano said. “But we’ve grown up a bit and I realised you can’t have a fit every day because otherwise you won’t be able to stand each other.

On the surface the quiet port city of Gothenburg doesn’t seem like it would harbor much soul music but it comes through in the dreamy rhythmical shifting moody creature that is Little Dragon. The four-piece band blends R&B, new wave, electronica and experimental pop. They kicked off 2011 with a headlining tour of the U.S. and thanks to a recommendation from superfan Questlove of the Roots, a performance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in March. In May, Little Dragon appeared on the track “Just Don’t” from Raphael Saadiq’s Stone Rollin’, a record some are already calling the album of the year. Big Boi and DJ Shadow called to
invite the group to work on new music. And it seems that the rest of the world is starting to catch on to what tastemakers from BBC’s Gilles Peterson and the DJs at Los Angeles’ influential KCRW have known for years. On July 26th, 2011 Little Dragon will release Ritual Union, an album which finds futuristic, trance-like rhythms mixed with the soulful vibes of their debut LP plus upfront and danceable sounds of Machine Dreams.
